If you are a pass holder, you can head to Shirakawa-go and neighbouring Gokayama regions from Kansai International Airport directly. This famous World Heritage Site is popular for its traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses as the steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. The historic architectural designs were meant to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region during winter. In autumn, the compound was filled with autumn leaves and gives the best spot for photography.

You will be impressed by its modern design with subtle touches of gold and traditional décor. The Tsuzumi-mon gate is built with local Japanese cypress where the gigantic Motenashi dome is meant to mainly protect travellers from the rains and snowfalls typical to the region. What a beautiful masterpiece!
